Deus ex cinema

The Deus ex cinema group was founded on July 4th 2000. The goal of the group is to analyse and discuss religion and film. Members of the group come from many fields, and include theologians, film scholars, film makers and artist.

Screenings
Deus ex cinema holds weekly seminars where one or more films is screened and discussed in light of religion and theology. The group has held numerous seminars and lectures on various topics.

Books
Deus ex cinema has published four books on religion and film:

  • Guð á hvíta tjaldinu (God on the Silver Screen)
  • Von í þjáningu (Hope in Suffering)
  • Kónguló eða kærleiksguð (Spidergod or God of love)
  • Through the Mirror. Reflections on the Films of Andrei Tarkovsky

Website
Deus ex cinema established a website in Icelandic in 2001. It contains analysis of over 500 films. In 2007 work began on an English version of the site. A major section of the site is a database on religious themes in films.

Á sama hátt má leita að myndum þar sem sagan af Kain og Abel kemur fyrir, myndum með kristsgervingum og svo mætti lengi telja. Á vefnum er starfrækt ritrýnt veftímarit og er það opið öllum fræðimönnum.

Research Projects
Deus ex cinema members have also worked on numerous independent research projects. These include an analysis of Kieslowski's Dekalog, an analysis of holocust films, redemption in films, priests in films, religious groups in films.
